The Cross River State Task Group on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (STG-WASH) convened its maiden Thursday at the Ministry of Water Resources (MoWR) Conference Room in Calabar Municipality. The event was in collaboration with Self Help Africa (SHA).

In his opening address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, Mr Okon Ita lauded those present. He underscored the importance of collective action in addressing WASH challenges.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions across Cross River State, the Permanent Secretary said “We need to meet to improve the WASH sector. Take this assignment seriously, all we want is to revitalise the sector. We had nose-dived over the years hence the essence of this group and meeting.”

The gathering aimed to enhance the state’s WASH agenda through strategic planning and stakeholder engagement and had members nominated for vacant offices.

Mr Archibong Jeremiah of WASH Media Network was nominated to serve as the STG-WASH Public Relations Officer (PRO) leading a team of three. Mr Eni Nkanu of the Ministry of Water Resources was nominated to serve as the Resource Mobilization Officer (RMO) leading a team of six.

A committee for drafting Terms of Reference (TORs) for the technical working groups was also constituted. The working groups are water supply, sanitation and hygiene, WASH in emergency and climate change and research.

Stakeholders participated in a capacity assessment session facilitated via Menti.com, identifying gaps to strengthen through targeted interventions.

The meeting progressed with drafting a three-month work plan (January–March 2025) and aligning proposed activities with the STG-WASH inauguration. These plans will provide actionable steps for advancing WASH initiatives in the state.
