The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Prof Francisca Bassey, has lauded the visionary leadership of the Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, and the unwavering commitment of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for restoring peace, security and stability across the state, creating a conducive environment for learning and development.
Prof Bassey gave the commendation on Thursday, July 30, 2026, while speaking with journalists during a collaborative security programme held at the Metropolitan Hotel, Calabar. The event was organised by the Cross River State Government in partnership with the Department of State Services and other security agencies to strengthen cooperation in addressing security challenges.
The Vice Chancellor, who has consistently championed a peaceful academic environment and the welfare of the University community, described the transformation in the state’s security landscape as remarkable and worthy of commendation.
She noted that the deliberate policies and proactive security initiatives of the Governor, backed by coordinated operations of security agencies, have restored confidence among citizens and safeguarded lives and property.
Recalling the dark days of insecurity, Prof. Bassey said the state once witnessed disturbing incidents of kidnappings, violent crimes and cult-related clashes that disrupted normal life and threatened the smooth conduct of academic activities. She cited painful experiences involving members of the University community and other residents, stressing that fear had become a defining feature of daily life during that period.
The Vice Chancellor stated that the narrative has changed significantly under the present administration. She added that UNICROSS now operates in a peaceful and secure atmosphere, with lectures, examinations and other academic engagements proceeding without disruption. She stated that staff, students and members of the public now move freely across the state, including at night, with renewed confidence in the security architecture.
Prof Bassey attributed the remarkable improvement to the purposeful leadership of Governor Otu, the professionalism and synergy among the security agencies, and the sustained intelligence-driven strategies that have considerably strengthened public safety across Cross River State.
She further observed that the prevailing peace has not only enhanced academic excellence at UNICROSS but has also contributed to the state’s growing attractiveness for investment, education and socio-economic development.
The Vice Chancellor urged other states grappling with security challenges to emulate Cross River’s model by demonstrating strong political will, fostering effective collaboration among security agencies and engaging all critical stakeholders in the pursuit of sustainable peace.
Prof Bassey’s remarks underscore UNICROSS’ appreciation of the Cross River State Government’s steadfast support for higher education and reaffirm the University’s commitment to partnering with government and security agencies in promoting peace, safety and an enabling environment for teaching, learning, research and community service.
