By Florence Oluohu

In what seems like a bountiful harvest, the Comrade Archibong Bassey-led Cross River council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has congratulated its members appointed Chief Press Secretary for different local government councils.

Archibong, who described the appointments as “Well deserved, considering the calibre and quality of the persons so appointed.”

Thanking the chairmen, Archibong said “NUJ appreciates chairmen of councils who have chosen to appoint professionals to handle their media relations. They are assured of our support in projecting their reports.”

The Union Chairman added, “In all things, professionalism is key and we must not hold the erroneous belief that anybody can handle media matters. The difference will be seen in due course, as the works of the professionals will manifest for the good of their councils.”

She enjoined the national body of NUJ to take steps to make it mandatory that all media related appointees should be members of the NUJ.

Archibong prayed for divine wisdom, guidance and direction for the new appointees, imploring them to “uphold the high moral and professional standards which paved the way for your appointment in the first place, and be assured of the support of council and your colleagues in the discharge of your onerous duties.”

The new appointees are the former General Manager of Cross River Newspaper Corporation, Emma Unah (Yala); Editor of Weekend Chronicle, Ekong Okpa (Obubra); Oqua Etim of Cross River Broadcasting Corporation (Calabar Municipality); Eyo Eyo of Glimmer Newspaper (Bakassi); Arit Ndem of NTA (Odukpani); Nkese Eneyo of CRBC (Calabar South); and Daniel Agbor of Beagles newspaper (Akamkpa).
