The Cross River State Task Group on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (STG-WASH) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene programmes across the state by inaugurating a new chairman and reviewing ongoing sector initiatives.
The meeting, which ushered in Dr Gabriel Ukwada as the STG-WASH chairman and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, was held on Monday at the Cross River State Water Board Conference Room in Calabar. He takes over from Dr Okon Ita.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the meeting in his office, Dr Gabriel said he’s pleased to lead the STG-WASH and will put in his best.
Dr Gabriel assured that sourcing funds will be prioritised. He said, “Government is a continuum. We all know in the state, we have paucity of funds available to ministries and agencies. As a new Chairman coming on board, I’ll work closely with my Commissioner to see how we can break into the ranks and file in the system, see how we can penetrate, have an audience with the Deputy Governor, possibly have an audience with the Governor, and present the plight of the STG-WASH programme in the state.”
On the issue of basic water amenities, he said: “If you don’t provide the necessary water amenities, potable drinking water for the people, there might be a breakdown of preventable diseases in the communities.”
Dr Gabriel assured that he will put in his best, revealing that he is a team player. “I put in my best, the way I can. My strong point is synergy among colleagues. I do a lot of interfacing. It is when you get to a place and feel you are alphanumeric, you know it all, you have challenges. But if you carry everybody along, by the time you pool your ideas and resources together, you can achieve the result you need. And that is what I’ve come here to do.”
