The conviction is expected to bolster ongoing campaigns for justice and protection of women and girls across the country, with hopes that it will deter future perpetrators.

In a landmark ruling, Ita Okon, a 47-year-old man, was yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of an 8-year-old girl. The judgment was delivered by Honourable Justice Blessing Egwu of Family Court 2 in Calabar, Cross River State.

The court found Okon guilty of the heinous crime and, in addition to the life sentence, ordered him to pay a compensation of N1,000,000 to the young survivor.

This conviction marks a significant victory in the fight against violence towards women and girls in Nigeria. Commendations have poured in for the Nigerian Police Force, Cross River State Ministry of Justice, and Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI) for their efforts in ensuring justice was served.

The conviction is expected to bolster ongoing campaigns for justice and protection of women and girls across the country, with hopes that it will deter future perpetrators.
