The University of Calabar has publicly addressed the recent invalidation of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates issued to 93 individuals who were fraudulently included in the mobilization process. The university’s management has expressed support for the NYSC’s decision and highlighted its role in uncovering the fraudulent activities.

According to a statement released by the university on August 13, 2024, the management had initially discovered irregularities in September 2023, when it was reported that an individual who had not graduated from the university was participating in the NYSC program. This discovery led to an internal investigation that revealed a total of 11 cases of fraudulent entries into the NYSC portal.

In October 2023, the university informed the NYSC and requested that the involved individuals be apprehended and prosecuted. This move was followed by further investigations, which uncovered an additional 167 cases, bringing the total number of fraudulent entries to 178.

The investigation, conducted by the university’s management, confirmed that none of the individuals involved were listed in the university’s official graduation records or the mobilization lists submitted to the NYSC. The university emphasized that these names were not uploaded by the institution and were somehow inserted into the NYSC portal through unknown means.

As a result of the investigation, the university suspended the Data Entry Officer, Mr Obi Obi Endurance, who is now under investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC). The university has also communicated the findings to the NYSC, ICPC, the Federal Ministry of Education, and the National Universities Commission (NUC) for further action.

In a bid to maintain the integrity of the institution, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, has met with the NYSC Director-General to discuss the situation and ensure that all parties involved are held accountable.

The university management reaffirmed its commitment to upholding academic excellence and transparency. It also urged the NYSC and ICPC to continue their investigations to fully uncover the source of the fraudulent entries and take appropriate action against those responsible.
