He urged the aggrieved members and the Speaker to find a truce while calling on the Speaker to understand that he is a “first among equals” and that members have rights and benefits that should not be denied by his office.

The political crisis in the Cross River State House of Assembly shows no signs of abating. On May 22nd, 2024, 17 out of 25 members voted to impeach Speaker Elvert Ayambem. However, Mr. Ayambem maintains he was not removed following the chaotic session and considers the impeachment attempt null and void.

In a twist, all 25 members of the State House of Assembly have agreed to restore normalcy after a meeting with Governor, Sen. Bassey Edet Otu on Sunday night [27 May 2024].

The meeting which was described as “interactive” also saw the lawmakers agree to maintain the status quo with Hon. Elvert Ayambem remaining as speaker.

Governor Otu in a release by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Nsa Gill restated his commitment to constitutional democracy, separation of powers, and the rule of law.

He urged the aggrieved members and the Speaker to find a truce while calling on the Speaker to understand that he is a “first among equals” and that members have rights and benefits that should not be denied by his office.
