The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims circulating on social media alleging that its Chairman, Joash Amupitan, endorsed a partisan message on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
In a press statement issued on April 10, 2026, signed by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, the Commission described the allegation as false, malicious, and a deliberate attempt to undermine the integrity and neutrality of the electoral body at a critical period of electoral preparations and reforms.
INEC clarified that the Chairman does not own or operate any personal account on X and has never engaged in partisan commentary or political activity in either his private or official capacity. The Commission emphasised that the purported social media post being circulated online is entirely fabricated.
The electoral body further revealed that cybercriminals have previously created fake social media accounts using the Chairman’s identity to defraud unsuspecting members of the public. According to the statement, several such accounts have been identified and reported to security agencies, describing the latest incident as part of a continuing pattern of digital impersonation and misinformation.
INEC warned that it is collaborating with security and cyber-intelligence agencies to track down those responsible for the false claims and identity theft. The Commission stressed that such actions constitute criminal offences under Nigeria’s cybercrime laws and assured that perpetrators would be prosecuted.
