Two middle-aged men have lost their lives following a violent machete clash in Akpap-Okoyong community, Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The incident, which occurred in the community near Calabar Municipality, was reportedly triggered by a dispute over a missing bunch of plantain from a farm.
A resident and eyewitness, identified as Ettemma, disclosed that the victims, Edet and Effiong (other names not gotten), engaged in a confrontation that escalated into violence, during which both men inflicted fatal machete injuries on each other.
According to the eyewitness, the conflict began when Effiong noticed that a bunch of plantains had been removed from his farm. While expressing his anger publicly in the community, Effiong was allegedly told by another resident that Edet had been seen earlier coming from the direction of the farm carrying a bunch of plantains.
Ettemma further explained that Effiong allegedly attacked Edet first with a machete he was holding, after which Edet reportedly picked up another machete nearby and retaliated.
Both men were rushed to a nearby health centre for treatment, but were said to have died due to the severity of their injuries and the facility’s inability to provide adequate medical care.
The incident has left the Akpap-Okoyong community in mourning, with residents expressing concern over the increasing incidence of violent conflicts arising from minor disputes.
The police are currently investigating the incident.
