The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Cross River State, Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, has condemned the reported suspension of corps members’ deployment to the state over the deplorable condition of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Obubra, describing the development as a national embarrassment and an indictment of the state government.

Toyo said the report exposed the government’s failure to prioritise youth development, maintain educational infrastructure, and set a clear policy agenda for young people in the state.

In a statement signed by Mr Archibong Eyo, Toyo’s spokesman, the ADC candidate argued that the condition of the Obubra camp reflected a broader pattern of neglect affecting public educational facilities, accusing the government of allowing existing infrastructure to deteriorate without making meaningful investments in new institutional facilities.

She said the camp could serve purposes beyond NYSC orientation activities if properly maintained, including sports, vocational training and recreational programmes designed to empower young people.

Toyo attributed the situation to the absence of a comprehensive, youth-driven state policy capable of addressing the development needs and future aspirations of young people in Cross River.

According to her, an ADC-led government would place youth development at the centre of its governance agenda, using a comprehensive empowerment plan to rehabilitate facilities such as the Obubra NYSC camp and expand their use for training, sports and other productive activities.

She maintained that public infrastructure should be treated as a long-term investment in human development rather than an obligation that government officials could neglect.

“An ADC government built on inclusivity will see and treat public infrastructure as an investment in our people and our future, not an afterthought,” she said.
