Renowned Nigerian biotechnologist, Mkpouto Pius has launched the WomanUp Scholarship Programme, a tertiary education support fund aimed at bridging the financial gap for female undergraduates of public universities in Nigeria.
Announcing the initiative on Thursday, Ms Mkpouto said the launch of the education fund was driven by her passion for education and commitment to gender equality.
She noted that many academically gifted young girls face financial barriers that hinder their university education, and the WomanUp Scholarship Programme is designed to help bridge that gap.
“I am extremely pleased to announce the launch of the WomanUp Scholarship Programme,” she shared in a Facebook post. Mkpouto, a medical geneticist and University of Manchester alumni, explained that the programme seeks to cultivate a generation of outstanding women who will excel academically and thrive in their careers, while also contributing to the broader goal of gender equity.
“This is merit-based, combined with financial need. It’s not just about financial support. The program is for people who are ready to commit to academic excellence, and that involves putting in the work for four long years.
“The WomanUp Programme intends to raise a crop of excellent women who will excel in their academics and subsequent career, and move us significantly towards achieving gender equality,” she added.
Beyond financial aid, the WomanUp Scholarship Programme offers comprehensive support, including internet subscription for beneficiaries, dedicated mentorship, postgraduate funding opportunities for top graduates, and lifetime membership in The Mkpouto Pius Foundation Fellows network, among other benefits.
Outlining the eligibility criteria, Ms Mkpouto emphasized that applicants must be Nigerian, female, and recently admitted into a public university in Nigeria.
