The Cross River State Government has extended the curfew earlier imposed on the warring communities of Ugep and Idomi in Yakurr Local Government Area following renewed security concerns over the communal land dispute.

In a press statement dated May 12, 2026, and signed by the Commissioner for Information, Erasmus Ekpang, the government said the extension followed a fresh assessment of the security situation and consultations with key stakeholders in both communities.

According to the statement, the curfew will now run from Tuesday, May 12, to Friday, May 15, 2026, between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily within and around the affected communities.

The government warned that activities capable of escalating tensions, including alleged underground meetings and inflammatory statements by certain individuals, were being closely monitored.

It stated that security agencies had been placed on “red alert” to track perpetrators and ensure strict compliance with the curfew order.

The government also directed security operatives to ensure that movement along the Ugep–Ikom highway remains smooth and unhindered throughout the curfew period.

Governor Bassey Otu further called on the Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Area, the Paramount Ruler, clan heads, village heads, and other stakeholders to work closely with security agencies to sustain peace and prevent a breakdown of law and order.

The state government warned that it would not hesitate to take tougher measures against the affected communities if the situation fails to improve after the expiration of the extended curfew on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

The Ugep-Idomi crisis, rooted in a longstanding communal land dispute, has continued to generate tension in parts of Yakurr LGA, prompting government intervention to restore peace and stability.
