History was made at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) as alumni of the institution took a bold step in shaping the university’s future by electing their first-ever representative to the Governing Council. This groundbreaking event marks the first implementation of a 2019 law that provides for alumni representation on the university’s highest decision-making body.
Dr Ofut Ogar emerged victorious as the pioneer Convocation Representative following an electoral process that saw enthusiastic participation from graduates of the university. The election, years in the making, signals a new era of inclusion and accountability within the institution’s governance framework.
Speaking on behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the UNICROSS Alumni Association, the National President, Dr Inyali Peter, described the development as a “triumph of perseverance” and a significant milestone in the institution’s democratic growth.
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr Ofut Ogar on his historic election,” said Dr. Peter. “We have full confidence in his ability to represent the interests of the alumni and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of the university.”
In a dual celebration of alumni impact, the Association also commissioned a long-awaited infrastructural project – the completion of four functional toilet facilities for the ETF and Prefab lecture blocks, primarily used for General Studies courses. Although the structures were built several years ago, they remained non-functional due to the absence of fittings and water supply.
The project, previously stalled, was brought to the attention of the Alumni leadership two months ago. After a formal request, the university management, under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Francisca Bassey, approved the Alumni Association’s proposal to take over and complete the initiative. Within a month, the association executed structural renovations, installed all necessary facilities, constructed concrete pathways, and drilled a borehole to provide a water supply.
Dr Peter lauded Prof Bassey’s responsive leadership, stating that her collaboration with the Alumni Association reflects a shared vision for institutional development. “Though not an alumnus herself, Prof. Bassey has consistently encouraged us to unite and contribute meaningfully. Her leadership is both visionary and inclusive.”
He also commended the Governor and Visitor to the University for appointing a Vice-Chancellor committed to transformation. “We assure the government and university management that the Alumni Association will remain a proactive partner in advancing the university’s mission.”
