A State House of Assembly aspirant for the Bakassi Constituency, Rt Hon Grace Etim Bassey, has pointed to her grassroots experience and collaboration with non-governmental organisations as key credentials in her quest for legislative office.
Bassey, who addressed supporters during a meeting in Bakassi Local Government Area, said her track record as a two-term councillor and leader of the 7th Bakassi Legislative Assembly demonstrates her capacity to deliver despite structural limitations at the local level.
According to her, the absence of constituency allowances for councillors did not prevent her from initiating development efforts, particularly in the areas of health awareness and agriculture.
“As a councillor, we do not have access to constituency funds like members of the House of Assembly or National Assembly,” she said. “But I have worked with NGOs/CSOs to execute projects and create awareness that impacts lives.”
She added that her interventions were not limited to her ward, noting that she extended activities across multiple communities within the local government.
Bassey argued that her experience at the grassroots has provided her with a clearer understanding of the needs of the people, which she believes positions her to contribute more effectively at the state legislative level.
She maintained that representation, legislation and oversight should be driven by practical engagement with constituents rather than campaign promises alone, stressing that her record offers measurable evidence of service.
The aspirant also reiterated her readiness to contest, stating that she is fully prepared for the demands of public office and committed to advancing development in Bakassi Constituency.
Political activities in Cross River State have continued to intensify ahead of the next election cycle, with aspirants increasingly highlighting their credentials and past performance as part of efforts to gain public support.
