The Cross River State Police Command has launched an investigation into allegations of police brutality involving Benedict Osang, popularly known as “Bishop,” in Boki Local Government Area.

A viral video circulating on social media alleges that Osang, a former police officer, was involved in acts of brutality against citizens in the area. In response, the Command has clarified that Osang is no longer a serving member of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ugbo Irene, Osang was enlisted as a Police Constable in the 2011 recruitment intake but deserted his duty while serving under the Rivers State Police Command. He is currently a political appointee in Boki LGA and has no official affiliation with the police force.

The statement emphasized that while the Nigeria Police Force, Cross River State Command, has no obligations toward Osang, it remains committed to ensuring justice. The Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Augustine Grimah, has ordered a thorough investigation into the alleged violations of citizens’ rights and any criminal activities linked to Osang or others involved.

The Command urged residents of Boki LGA who may have experienced victimization to come forward with relevant evidence to aid the investigation. It further assured the public that the findings of the investigation would be made public in the interest of transparency and justice.
