In a bid to familiarize with institutions within Cross River, Mr Afufu Anthony Ogar, the Special Assistant (Students’ Orientation) to Senator Bassey Edet Otu, the state Governor has begun familiarization visits to tertiary institutions.
The visit which is meant to solidify relations with his office, the institutions and students began with the University of Calabar (UNICAL), College of Nursing UNICAL and School of Nursing Moore Road, all in Calabar the state capital.
At the University of Calabar, the team was received by Professor Grace Eno Nta, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Banku Obi.
She commended the SA who is a former Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution and suggested areas his office can come in to close the orientation gap between the students and larger society, especially as it concerns governance.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration said “Everybody ought to be up and working to ensure that these things that we hold dear and desire come to be. I thank you for showing interest, you need to introduce things that will involve them at different levels, all work and no play is also not healthy.”
Counselling students, she maintained that “University is not just a glamour, it can be very captivating that one could get away without even understanding. So I thank you for coming, I will inform the VC that you came.”
Dr Citizens Ekpo, Special Assistant on labour matters to the Vice Chancellor accompanied the DVC Administration to receive the government delegation.
At the UNICAL College of Nursing, the management team led by the Provost were joyful about the visit.
Elated, the Provost, Mrs Item Akpan committed to her office, “Count on me SA on every aspect you need to ensure this orientation of yours is actualized.”
She lamented about the lack of proper orientation among many youths which has led to moral decadence in the society, reiterating that “I think with this initiative of yours it will go a long way to reduce and possibly avert the subsequent occurrence of such ungodliness.”
The Provost committed that “I look forward to receiving your notice in this regard and will be pleased to attend myself.”
Also in attendance were the management members of the college, they are Dr Agnes Aneme, Registrar; Mrs Glory Harrison, Deputy Provost Administration; Mrs Ignatius Philomina; and Victor Asuquo, the SUG President.
Immediately after, the team proceeded to Moore Road where they met with the Provost of the School of Nursing on the same mission.
Mrs Joy Obeten, the institution’s provost was equally happy to receive the Special Assistant (Students’ Orientation) to Senator Bassey Edet Otu and his team.
Equally, she opened her doors to the SA and pledged to ensure her students utilize the opportunity.
In all the visits, the SA reiterated that his sole purpose is to familiarize and open the government to students by way of orienting them on the progress of the Senator Bassey Edet Otu administration.
He noted that his “Orientation programme will open the government to the students as well as connect them with the relevant MDAs where their voices would be heard.”
According to the Yala born, the familiarization visits are the first activity after rolling up his sleeve to ensure all hands are on deck to deliver on his mandate.
Mr Ugah James, Chairman of the Directorate of Programme and Project and Enyam Kelvin, SA Students’ Affairs to the state governor accompanied the SA to the visits. Recall that recently he established the Directorate of Programmes and Projects to enhance students’ orientation.
