In a surprising turn of events, the Student Union Government (SUG) parliament of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has suspended its president, Comr. Ogbodim Udop Humphrey.
The suspension stems from a protest organized by Comr. Humphrey on May 7th, 2024. The protest aimed to demand answers regarding the Governing Council’s recent suspension of the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Augustine Angba.
According to the SUG Senate, Comr. Humphrey’s actions deviated from the SUG’s established role as a non-partisan organization focused on student welfare.
The SUG Senate explained in a statement, saying Comr. Humphrey’s actions “deviated from the SUG’s non-partisan role, which is centered on student well-being.”
They reinstated the “previously suspended Senate President,” disassociated themselves from “the protest led by Comr. Humphrey,” and suspended him from his position as SUG President, effective May 8th, 2024. Comr. Theresa Theodore Ejah was appointed as the acting SUG President.
Additionally, a five-member committee was formed “to investigate the allegations against Comr. Humphrey.” The SUG also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the newly appointed acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ochang Steven.
This development has sparked discussions on the UNICROSS campus and social media, with some students supporting the SUG’s stance on neutrality and others backing Comr. Humphrey’s right to address student concerns.
