In a recent gathering, the Afrihealth Optonet Association (AHOA) brought together representatives from over a dozen countries to discuss the pressing needs and challenges in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. The forum, held in partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), focused on poverty reduction, good health, education, climate action, and gender equality.

Dr Uzodinma Adirieje, CEO of AHOA, emphasized the importance of bringing the SDGs to grassroots communities and engaging stakeholders through advocacy, social mobilization, and strategic partnerships. With members from 119 countries, AHOA has established itself as a prominent network supporting health, biodiversity, and climate action initiatives.

Notable speakers included Dr Bala Yusuf Yunusa, representing Her Excellency Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Sustainable Development Goals who outlined Nigeria’s efforts to integrate the SDGs into national policies.

Dr Yunusa highlighted the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, conflicts, and climate change but reaffirmed the country’s commitment to achieving these global targets.

As the 2030 deadline approaches, the forum underscored a call for action, collaboration, and resource mobilization.

Participants also advocated for including SDG education in school curricula, emphasizing that early awareness is crucial for long-term engagement. The ECOSOC Partnership Forum, set for February 2025, will continue this dialogue, focusing on evidence-based strategies to fast-track SDG achievements globally.

This forum marks a significant step in galvanizing international and local stakeholders toward a sustainable future, reinforcing AHOA’s role as a champion for the SDGs in Nigeria and beyond.
