The Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to the growth and transformation of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), pledging fresh interventions aimed at improving infrastructure, strengthening welfare, and addressing the institution’s pressing concerns.
Governor Otu recently committed when he received the University’s Management and the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at the Governor’s Office in Calabar.
Leading the delegation, the Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Prof Francisca Bassey, expressed appreciation to the Governor for granting the audience and for his continued support for the institution. She explained that the visit was designed to provide students with the opportunity to engage directly with the Governor on issues affecting the university while seeking sustained government intervention to enhance the institution’s development.
Speaking on behalf of the students, the SUG President, Comrade Favour Ogar, thanked Governor Otu for his consistent commitment to the university, particularly his appointment of Prof. Bassey as Vice Chancellor and his swift intervention following the recent road accident involving some UNICROSS students.
Responding, Governor Otu commended the Vice Chancellor and the University’s management for their resilience and dedication despite the challenges confronting the institution. He noted that he was already fully briefed on the university’s needs through previous engagements with the Vice C. He assured the delegation that his administration would continue taking practical steps to resolve them.
Among the Governor’s commitments was the provision of additional vehicles for the university, following a request already submitted by the Vice Chancellor. He also pledged to upgrade the institution’s Medical Centre to ensure it delivers quality healthcare services to students and staff.
The Governor further acknowledged the need to improve the university’s internal road network and assured the delegation that the request would receive the government’s attention as part of ongoing efforts to create a more conducive learning environment.
Calling for collective responsibility, Governor Otu urged all stakeholders within the university community to remain committed to the institution’s progress through dialogue, cooperation and shared sacrifice. He also announced plans to meet with the university’s industrial unions in the coming days to discuss their concerns and seek lasting solutions.
The meeting later continued behind closed doors with senior government officials. When the discussions concluded, members of the UNICROSS delegation, led by the Vice Chancellor, emerged visibly optimistic, raising hopes that concrete solutions to the institution’s lingering challenges may soon be implemented.
