A High Court sitting in Calabar has convicted John Sunday Eyo for the rape of a 16-year-old girl and ordered his permanent remand in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The judgment was delivered on Tuesday by Hon Justice Blessing Egwu, who found the defendant guilty of the offence and ordered that he be remanded following his conviction.
The verdict has been welcomed by child rights advocates, who described it as a significant step in the fight against sexual and gender-based violence in Cross River State.
Commending those involved in the prosecution, the advocates praised the Cross River State Police Command for its role in the investigation, as well as the Honourable Attorney General of Cross River State, Etubom Ededem Ani, and the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Okoi Ukam, for their commitment to ensuring justice was served.
They also expressed special appreciation to Mrs Linda Asuquo for her dedication throughout the prosecution of the case, describing her efforts as instrumental to the successful outcome.
The Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI) and its civil society partners were equally acknowledged for their relentless advocacy and commitment to protecting the rights and safety of children.
