Cross River State Governor, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has emphasised the importance of the ongoing Continuous Voters’ Registration (CVR) exercise, encouraging Nigerian youth to equip themselves with their voter cards ahead of the upcoming general elections.
The governor made this statement during a grand reception organised by the Cross River State Political Network (CRISPON) to celebrate his 66th birthday yesterday in Calabar. The event attracted CRISPON members from all seven local government areas in the Cross River Southern Senatorial District, as well as members of the less privileged communities and the general public.
Otu expressed his happiness at the turnout and stressed that the Continuous Voters’ Registration exercise deserves significant attention, stating that the country’s economic planning largely relies on numerical strength. Accompanied by his Chief of Staff, Hon Emmanuel Ironbar, and Special Adviser on General Duties, Barr Ekpenyoung Akiba, among other aides, the governor also announced plans for an upcoming intervention program aimed at benefiting the masses.
“I am very happy to be here today. I came earlier, but you were waiting for members from Bakassi and Akpabuyo. Indeed, today is my birthday, and I am delighted to celebrate it with all of you,” the governor said.
Adding that “CRISPON has been my partner from day one, and I assure you that you will never work alone. I wish I could stay longer, but I have many more engagements to attend. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. This gesture you have shown will surely be reciprocated.
“Our administration is committed to providing our young people with opportunities to thrive. For the first time in the history of this state, we are set to introduce something unique. I believe this week we will announce some of our social safety net programs, which will include almost every member of CRISPON.
“We will work together to make Cross River State great again. Thank you once more for your support, which we will need again in the near future, especially as we continue with the Continuous Voters Registration exercise. We must not be left out. To participate in some of the programs we are introducing, you will need to demonstrate your commitment by showing your voter’s card. As responsible citizens, I know you care about the future, and we understand that the country’s economic planning is based on numerical strength. Let’s harness this opportunity to move our beloved state and Nigeria forward.”
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr Prince Michael Abuo, the Director General of CRISPON, praised the governor for his outstanding leadership qualities.
He described the occasion as an expression of love for a selfless and exemplary leader who prioritises the interests of the masses over personal gains.
Abuo, who also serves as the State Coordinator of AUDA-NEPAD, commended the governor’s remarkable developmental achievements in just two years of his administration and called for the sustainability of these efforts.
