Under the banner of Obudu Women in Politics (OWIP), a group of women has officially endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Bassey Otu, along with their deputies, for a second term in office in 2027.
The endorsement event took place on Tuesday, at the training pitch of the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar Municipality, the capital of Cross River State. The group emphasised that this decision was not merely for political alignment or recognition but rather stemmed from a “genuine interest and commitment to the leadership style” of the Otu administration over the past two years.
The event was chaired by the Special Adviser to the Governor of Cross River State on General Duties, Barrister Akiba Ekpenyong.
In his opening remark, the chairman said he is delighted about the endorsement. He said “We have a government that ensures women are part of leadership, politics, and are being heard.”
In his brisk speech, he urged the women to ensure the deeds of the current administration, both federal and state, are heard at the grassroots.
Led by Dr Sylvia Biwom Atsu, OWIP praised the Tinubu and Otu administrations for their “massive rebuilding, reconstruction, and recalibrating efforts,” highlighting that some projects are already completed while others are nearing completion.
Specifically, the group expressed strong commendation for the governor’s commitment to critical ongoing projects, particularly those benefiting the Northern Senatorial District of the state. These projects include the “resuscitation of the Obudu Ranch Resort, the continuation of the Obudu International Cargo Airport project, the Obudu-German Hospital, and the Nfom-Okpoma-Okuku and Yahe-Ebo-Izekwe-Wanokom-Wanikade-Wanihem-Benue Border Road.”
In response, Governor Bassey Edet Otu, represented by the Commissioner for Information, Dr Erasmus Ekpang, praised the women for their endorsement, stating, “Anything that comes from women is always wonderful. You are indispensable.”
Reiterating the commitment of the “People’s First Administration,” Governor Otu remarked, “Cross River State was behind; we needed to fix some issues. We will restore Cross River State to its former glory.”
Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, the governor’s wife, was represented by Dr Inyang Asibong, the Special Adviser on Gender Mainstreaming to Governor Otu.
She expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “All the governor’s wife has accomplished—be it in health, environment, education, social welfare, or agriculture—speaks for itself.” She emphasised that victory at the polls is not achievable without the support of women.
The Commissioners for Industries, Housing, and Women’s Affairs, Dr Mathias Angioha, Dr Beatrice Igwe, and Mrs Edema Irom, respectively, gave goodwill messages. The Commissioner for Sports Development gave a spotlight on the President and Governor’s scorecards.
The women began with a match from millenium park, the Eleven-Eleven roundabout, through the highway into the stadium.
