Nigerian telecom operator Globacom has launched an embedded SIM (e-SIM) service, allowing customers to switch to its network without requiring a physical SIM card.

The company announced the rollout in a statement on Sunday, highlighting a 5GB data bonus for customers who activate the e-SIM with a data plan of at least N1,500.

The eSIM, a software-based digital chip built directly into smartphones and wearable devices, eliminates the need for a physical SIM card, enabling seamless switching between numbers.

Globacom described the technology as ideal for frequent travellers and professionals who require multiple lines without the hassle of carrying multiple SIM cards.

One of the key advantages of the e-SIM, the company noted, is enhanced security, as it is more difficult to remove from a device compared to traditional SIM cards.

Additionally, the eSIM is environmentally friendly, helping to reduce plastic waste associated with conventional SIM cards.

“With this launch, we are reinforcing our commitment to providing future-ready services to our customers,” Globacom stated. “The eSIM offers high-net-worth individuals and enterprise customers a seamless digital experience while also making it easier for users on other networks to join the Glo family.”

Existing Glo customers can switch to the e-SIM service, while new users from other networks can activate an additional SIM on their devices.

To check device compatibility, users can dial *#06# on their phones. If an EID (Embedded Identity Document) number appears on the screen, the device supports e-SIM technology.

“The customer can then proceed to the nearest Gloworld shop or Glo dealer outlet to migrate to e-SIM,” the company’s marketing team stated.

“The process takes only a few minutes, after which the customer can begin enjoying the benefits of an eSIM.”
