The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) Alumni Association has expressed its delight over the appointment of Ntufam Fidelis Ugbo, Esq as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, alongside the designation of Prof Francisca Bassey as Acting Vice Chancellor of the university.
In a statement signed by the National President, Dr Inyali Peter, and National Secretary, Hon Njang Ndoma, the alumni commended Governor Bassey Otu, Visitor to the university, for selecting individuals of distinguished character and competence to steer the institution during a critical period.
The alumni described Ntufam Ugbo as a seasoned administrator and politician with an impressive track record. As a former Secretary to the State Government and Executive Secretary of the National Planning Commission, Ugbo is recognized for his impactful leadership and policy acumen. The association believes his vast experience as an economist and lawyer will strengthen the university’s governance and policy direction.
Similarly, the appointment of Prof Francisca Bassey as Acting Vice Chancellor was lauded as a strategic move. A Fulbright Scholar and Professor of Organic Chemistry, Prof. Bassey is celebrated for her academic brilliance and administrative expertise. Her career at the University of Calabar includes key roles such as Director of the Centre for Educational Services, Pioneer Director of the Directorate of Pre-Degree Programmes, and first female Director of the Centre for General Studies.
Prof Bassey’s achievements include introducing Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for regular exams, pioneering virtual lectures, and implementing biometric exam screening systems. Her scholarly contributions, with over 50 published research findings, and her mentorship of postgraduate students have earned her recognition in professional circles, including the Organization for Women Scientists in Developing Countries and the Chemical Society of Nigeria.
The alumni association expressed confidence that her leadership will usher in a new era of growth, development, and academic excellence for UNICROSS.
“The university has faced significant challenges in recent months and could not have asked for better leadership. We are optimistic that this team will address the institution’s challenges and elevate its standards,” the statement read.
