Electricity consumers in Calabar have staged a peaceful protest at the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) headquarters to decry estimated billing practices and poor power supply.

The protesters, led by the Special Adviser to the Senator Bassey Edet Otu, Cross River State Governor on Power, Engr Emmanuel Nkpeh presented a 12-point demand to PHED, which includes:

“Adequate allocation and utilization of power to all parts of Cross River State. Maintenance, repairs, and replacement of all failed distribution transformers within the state. Provision of meters designated for Cross River State. Immediate repairs or replacement of the 15 MVA power transformers at the Amika injection substation. Removal of line isolators indiscriminately installed across Calabar Metropolis. Prompt replacement of failed 11kV panels and circuit breakers in Amika and Flour Mill injection substations.

Others are “Replacement of all failed transformer accessories, including low-voltage cables, upriser cables, feeder pillars, and cable lugs. Public declaration of all the bands in the state for accurate energy billing. Improvement of national grid allocation to the state. A change in approach toward the maintenance of power infrastructure in Cross River State. Immediate reinstatement of all Cross Riverians unjustly disengaged from PHED services. And Identification of the representative of Cross River State on the PHED board.”

Responding, the PHED Regional Manager, Engr Gabriel Modupe, says steps are already being taken to address some of the listed concerns. However, the protesters stress the need for urgent action to alleviate the hardship caused by unreliable electricity in Cross River State.
