The Cross River State Executive Council convened its 11th regular meeting for the year at the State Council of Chiefs Chambers, Calabar, presided over by Governor Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu. The session focused on evaluating ongoing initiatives and approving new policies to further the state’s development.
In his opening remarks, Governor Otu commended his team for their commitment to the People First Agenda, emphasizing the administration’s dedication to improving the lives of residents. The governor reaffirmed his resolve to implement the ₦70,000 national minimum wage alongside corresponding adjustments for all grades, ensuring workers’ welfare remains a priority.
The governor also addressed the importance of fostering a culture of leadership accountability. He reminded executive council members to actively engage in events and commitments, warning against actions that undermine leadership directives. Additionally, he directed ministries and agencies to submit comprehensive performance reports within one week.
Addressing economic challenges faced by the populace, Governor Otu announced plans to distribute food items across the state to mitigate hardship during the festive season. The initiative, dubbed “Season of Sweetness 2,” aims to promote unity and purpose among residents of the state’s 18 local government areas.
Key Resolutions And Approvals
Following deliberations, the Executive Council approved and ratified the following initiatives:
1. Renaming the Secondary Education Board (SEB): The body will now be called the Senior Secondary Education Board (SSEB). This change aligns with national educational trends and aims to improve incentives and funding for the sector.
2. Funding for the Bathymetric Survey of the Bakassi Deep Sea Port: The council approved resources for the survey, which is expected to create significant employment opportunities.
3. Establishment of a Cassava Seed Multiplication and Cultivation Project: The council sanctioned the development of 500 hectares for cassava cultivation to support an ethanol factory and enhance food security in the state.
