The Cross River State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) held a World Press Conference at the NUJ Press Centre in Calabar, calling for peace, inclusivity, and transparency in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for November 2, 2024. The NYCN praised the recent developments in governance both at the national and state levels and reaffirmed its commitment to youth involvement in leadership and development.
Speaking on behalf of the Council, Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, Chairman of the Cross River State Chapter, extended appreciation to the Federal Government for granting autonomy to local governments across the nation. He described this policy as a “historic step toward empowering local communities” by enhancing resource allocation, transparency, and grassroots development.
In addition, the Council commended Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, for his commitment to democratic values, evidenced by his support for the forthcoming elections organized by the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC). Olayi praised the governor’s efforts in strengthening local governance and urged the public to participate actively in the democratic process.
Addressing the youth specifically, the NYCN emphasized the importance of youth inclusion in leadership positions at the local level. Olayi appealed to stakeholders to prioritize young candidates, especially as political parties have shown increased openness by nominating young leaders for key positions. “This bold move not only recognizes the potential of young leaders but also builds a foundation for sustainable leadership that reflects the aspirations of the youth in Cross River State,” Olayi stated.
The NYCN issued a strong warning to anyone planning to disrupt the elections, promising that it would support measures to maintain peace and order throughout the election period. Olayi also called on security agencies to ensure the safety of voters and to be proactive in dealing with potential threats. “We trust in the professionalism and commitment of our security agencies to uphold the peace,” he said, urging the agencies to take swift action against any individual or group attempting to interfere with the democratic process.
In closing, the NYCN encouraged all its members across the state’s 196 wards to participate fully in the election process and to support efforts that will lead to a peaceful and successful election. The Council expressed optimism that the elected leaders would act with integrity, using resources effectively for the development of local communities in alignment with the state government’s vision.
As the countdown to the November 2 elections continues, the NYCN has called upon the youth and all residents of Cross River State to work toward a democratic, transparent, and peaceful election, setting a positive example for future generations.
