The Cross River State Police Command has firmly dismissed allegations made in a publication by Sahara Weekly and Phoenix APP, dated August 17, 2024, suggesting that the Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Augustine Grimah, PSC, FCAI, ordered the release of suspects involved in the murder of an eight-month-pregnant woman. The Command has labelled the report as baseless and a deliberate attempt to damage the public’s trust in the Nigeria Police Force, particularly within Cross River State.

According to a press release issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ugbo Irene, the prime suspects, Mrs Ofem Usani Augustine and Mr Augustine Bassey, were apprehended in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, in the early hours of August 18, 2024. The arrest was conducted by detectives from the State CID in Calabar, following a written petition demanding a thorough investigation into the death of Mrs. Nneoyi Sunday Felix.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Augustine Grimah, reassured the public of the Command’s dedication to maintaining public safety and upholding the principles of equity, fairness, and justice. He confirmed that the investigation into the case has already commenced and that the findings will be communicated to the public in due course.

In addition, the CP warned bloggers and social media platforms against spreading unfounded and defamatory information that could harm innocent citizens.

He emphasised that no suspects had been released concerning this case and urged anyone with evidence to visit the Police Command Headquarters to present their facts.
