Social Action Nigeria in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) supported by the MacArthur Foundation has organized a one-day state-level anti-corruption sensitization and education workshop in Calabar, the Cross River state capital.
The theme of the event is “Enhancing Youth and CSOs Participation in Anti-corruption Agenda and Inclusive Development” and it had National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, students and Civil Society Organisations in attendance.
Dr Adamu Aliyu, Chairman of ICPC reiterated the commitment of the Commission to rooting out corrupt elements and practices in Nigeria.
Represented by the Commission’s Secretary, Distinguished Service Star of River State (DSSRS) Barrister Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu said “It is with great pleasure and an immense feeling of hope that I join you for this sensitisation workshop which aims at enhancing youth participation in anti-corruption agenda and inclusive development in our country.”
Outlining the scorecard of the Commission he revealed that “For years now, the ICPC has recognised the need to mobilize youth in their various categories, equipping them with knowledge and tools.”
To achieve the mandate of public enlightenment and education they began “Commissioning anti-corruption clubs in secondary schools in 2003. Other youth-related platforms as provided by the Commission in this regard include the National Anti-Corruption Vanguards in tertiary institutions and the NYSC-ICPC CDS groups among corps members all over the country.”
Dr Aliyu also shared a concern “Younger people who are expected to join forces with relevant authorities in rescuing Nigeria from corruption, to foster growth, have demonstrated corrupt tendencies in varied ways.”
The President of the African Council on Narcotics, Mr Rekpene Bassey presented a paper titled “Avoiding Destructive Behavior, Taking up the Challenge of Inspiring Leadership” stressing the need for all hands to be on deck to eradicate corruption painted a distressing picture.
ICPC Deputy Director, Department of Public Enlightenment and Education, Mr John Okor Odey spoke on “Steaming the Tides of Corruption at the Subnational Level – A Collective Approach.” The Ogoja born maintained that corruption can only be dealt with collectively.
On his part, Mr Isaac Botti, Programme Coordinator of Social Action Nigeria when presenting on “What is to be done! Nigeria Youths Against Corruption” thanked MacArthur Foundation for supporting the event and ICPC for their partnership.
Goodwill messages were presented by the NYSC Desk Officer of Anti-Corruption CDS, Mrs Queendaline Edet and the Students Union Government (SUG) President of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) Blessing Alims.
