The Cross River State Executive Council held its 6th meeting of the year at the Council of Chiefs Chambers, presided over by His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, the Executive Governor of Cross River State. The session was attended by the Deputy Governor, His Excellency Peter Odey, and other Honourable Commissioners and members of the State Executive Council.

In his opening remarks, Governor Otu commended the council members for their achievements in the past year under his People First Administration.

He emphasized the need for continuous improvement and urged exco members to enhance their contributions and collaboration in subsequent meetings. Governor Otu highlighted the importance of strengthening MDAs’ operations and keeping track of government development plans, policies, and projects.

Governor Otu also announced plans for an Executive Council retreat aimed at equipping members and other new appointees with the necessary skills to implement the administration’s mandate effectively. He underscored the significance of rigorous efforts to improve office work ethics and prompt submission of salary reports from PHEDC to avoid delays in salary payments.

Furthermore, Governor Otu addressed the issues surrounding expatriate workers in the state, which pose a security risk. He called for thorough documentation of expatriate profiles and stricter enforcement of regulations concerning licenses and corporate social responsibility.

A moment of silence was observed in honour of the late Elder Statesman and former Senate President, Dr Joseph Wayas, acknowledging his contributions through the efforts of his administration.

During the meeting, the council ratified several key resolutions:

  1. Approval of funds for the conduct of the 2024 Cross River State Primary Six Placement and Secondary School Examinations.
  2. Direct purchase approval of 21 units of Innoson Vehicles to enhance security surveillance by state security agencies.
  3. Development of the new Calabar Central Business District, designating the new Cultural Centre as the focal point.
  4. Release of funds for payment to AFG Aviation Ireland Limited for leasing two CR-J aircraft, with completion and delivery expected by October 2024.

The meeting concluded with Governor Otu reiterating the importance of accountability and collaboration among council members to achieve the administration’s objectives.
