The Cross River State Civil Society Network (CRSCSN) has officially submitted a formal advocacy article and position statement to the Secretary to the Cross River State Government, calling for the appointment of a Special Adviser for the Department of Civil Society/NGOs.
The submission, led by Leader Ben Usang and supported by forty-seven Civil Society Organizations within the state, emphasizes the necessity of such a role to ensure effective coordination and enhancement of the civil society community’s contributions to state governance.
The letter, dated July 16, 2024, stresses the importance of reinstating the position which was previously established during the administration of former Governor Liyel Imoke but lapsed by the end of Governor Ayade’s term. The advocacy group believes that the appointment of a Special Adviser will facilitate a stronger liaison between the state government and civil society organizations, fostering a more robust environment for their operations and initiatives.
In a related development, the CRSCSN has also requested a courtesy and advocacy visit to Honourable Davies Etta, Deputy Leader of the Cross River State House of Assembly.
This visit is scheduled for July 19, 2024, aiming to discuss the recent resolutions from the South-South regional conference on improving the regulatory environment for CSOs in Nigeria. The network hopes to garner legislative support for creating enabling policies that will improve the regulatory landscape for civil society operations in the state.
The letters, signed by Leader Ben Usang and Acting General Secretary Jonah Okpa, reflect the network’s commitment to sustaining and enhancing civil society’s role in governance and development in Cross River State.
Cross River State Government is yet to respond to these submissions and the scheduled advocacy visit.
