“Of all crashes, serious cases stood top in Q3 2023 with 1,419, compared to fatal and minor cases with 532 and 236 respectively,” the report reads.
Road traffic crashes in the third quarter of 2023 killed 715 men, 145 women, and 48 children, a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed.
Also, out of the 6,041 injured persons during the period, 4,625 were males and 1,416 were females. Among the injured were 247 children.
The report titled ‘Road Transport Data Q3 2023’ was uploaded on the NBS website on Friday.
During this period, there were 2,187 road traffic crashes, which reflects a 26.29 percent decrease compared to the second quarter of 2023, which recorded 2,967 incidents.
“Of all crashes, serious cases stood top in Q3 2023 with 1,419, compared to fatal and minor cases with 532 and 236 respectively,” the report reads.
“In addition, the three categories of cases recorded a decline, fatal declined by 29.63%, serious declined by 26.06% and minor cases declined by 19.18% in the quarter under review relative to the preceding quarter.
“A total of 3,371 vehicles were involved in road traffic crashes in Q3 2023, lower compared to the previous quarter, which recorded 4,615, indicating a decrease of 26.96%.”
While the north-central region registered the highest number of crashes with 880 incidents, followed by 600 incidents in the southwest, the south-south region had 107.
With 2,548, the north-central region recorded the highest number of casualties, followed by 1,802 in the southwest and 281 in the south-south region.
Meanwhile, the major causes of these accidents are speed violations, the use of phone while driving, tyre bursts, mechanically deficient vehicles and brake failure.
Overloading, dangerous and wrongful overtaking, dangerous driving, bad roads, route violations, road obstruction violations, sleeping on the steering wheel, driving under alcohol or drug influence, poor weather, fatigue and sign light violations also caused some of the accidents.
