The Cross River State government has issued a strong condemnation of the “flagrant abuse and inappropriate hoisting” of the national flag and state colors within the state, directing violators to rectify the situation immediately or face consequences.
The statement, signed by the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Erasmus Ekpang, highlights the misuse of national symbols in both public and private offices, including some government establishments. It emphasizes the specific guidelines for displaying the national flag and state colors, as outlined in the Nigerian constitution and by state government regulations.
Specifically, the statement issued on January 23, 2023, addresses the incorrect positioning of the state colors, which are designed horizontally, and not vertically, as observed on some public buildings. The government deems this deliberate act “unwholesome” and demands immediate rectification.
Furthermore, to guide citizens towards proper protocol, the statement directs individuals and institutions to seek guidance and materials from the Department of Orientation within the Ministry of Information. This department holds the mandate to produce and sell authorized national symbols, including the flag, state colors, coat of arms, and official portraits.
The government warns of “physical inspection and verification” measures to ensure compliance. Violators risk having their improperly displayed symbols confiscated.
The statement concludes with an appeal to all establishments and institutions within the state to treat national symbols with “respect, dignity, and honor.” This directive underscores the importance of adhering to national and state regulations in displaying these significant emblems.
