The Cross River State Government has dismissed as false reports alleging plans to relocate the Okuku Campus of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) from Yala Local Government Area to Akamkpa, describing the claim as baseless, politically motivated and intended to cause unnecessary panic.

In a press statement dated July 14, 2026, the Commissioner for Education, Professor Stephen Odey, said the rumour had generated anxiety among students, parents, staff and residents of Yala, noting that his office had received numerous enquiries from concerned members of the public seeking clarification.

The Commissioner categorically denied the claim, insisting that there was “no iota of truth” in the alleged relocation plan. He described the rumour as a complete fabrication orchestrated by political detractors to create confusion, sow discord and distract the government from its commitment to educational development in the state.

Odey stated that rather than relocating the campus, the administration of Governor Bassey Edet Otu has continued to strengthen the institution by approving the renovation of facilities at the Okuku Campus. He said the intervention, being carried out under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Francisca Bassey, demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing academic activities at the campus.

He emphasised that the Okuku Campus remains an integral part of the university and is experiencing growth, adding that it would continue to serve as a centre of academic excellence for future generations.

The Commissioner urged residents of Yala and the general public to disregard the rumour and refrain from spreading false information capable of causing unnecessary tension, reaffirming the state’s commitment to the continued development of tertiary education across Cross River State.
