Stakeholders across government, security agencies, civil society, and the private sector converged over the weekend in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, for the Niger Delta Security Summit, a high-level forum focused on addressing security challenges and driving sustainable development in the oil-rich region.

The summit, which featured keynote speeches, panel discussions, cultural performances, and an award ceremony, brought together experts and leaders to deliberate on pathways to peace, local content participation, and the future of asset security in the Niger Delta.

Delivering the summit keynote address, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Senate President, underscored the importance of collaboration among the federal government, state authorities, oil companies, and host communities. Represented by Sen Sunday Agadaga, he emphasised that true security can only be achieved through dialogue, inclusion, and justice.

Relatively, the Minister of Environment, Hon Balarabe Lawal, was elated, stating that the timing for the summit was apt. He was represented by Mr Hassan Ladura, who called on all oil companies to live up to the expectations of their host communities.

Panel sessions provided in-depth discussions on critical topics. The first session examined “The Future of Asset Security in the Niger Delta”, and the second session addressed “Local Content, Local Participation, and Peace Building in the Niger Delta”.

Earlier, the Convener of Oil and Gas Summit Group, Engr Success Jack, said the sector is the lifeblood of Nigerians. He beckoned to all and sundry to join in ensuring the dividends get to the hinterlands.

In the same vein, the local organising committee chairman, Mr Paul Ajie, said he anticipates that the summit will lead to lasting solutions.

The evening climaxed with the Niger Delta Security Summit Success Jack Award Night, celebrating individuals and organisations making significant contributions to peace and development in the region.
