The Cross River State Task Group on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (STG-WASH) has constituted a nine-member committee to develop a sustainability plan for the group as part of efforts to ensure the continuity of WASH programmes in the state.

The committee was inaugurated during the February meeting of the task group held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at the conference hall of the Ministry of Water Resources in Calabar.

Speaking on the importance of the committee, the Chairman of STG-WASH, Dr Okon Ita, stressed the need for a clear sustainability strategy, particularly in view of donor-supported interventions in the sector.

“It is important that we begin to plan for sustainability. If the donors pull out, what happens? We need to plan,” he said, urging members of the committee to work diligently in developing a comprehensive plan that will sustain the activities of the task group.

Members of the committee include Philip Igri of the State Planning Commission (SPC); Anthony Ugbe of the Primary Healthcare Development Agency (PHDA); Eni Nkanu of the Ministry of Water Resources (MoWR); Ada Fidelia of the Ministry of Local Government Affairs (MoLGA); Eke Okon Edet of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWATSSA); Pastor Maurice Bassey of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN); Juliet Orok of the Network of Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN); Nakanda Iyadim of the Ministry of Information (MoI); and Kingsley Ekpenyong of the Cross River State Water Board.

During the meeting, members also received updates on several ongoing WASH-related activities, including the retraining of members of the WASH Media Network, the NEWSAN advocacy roadmap, and an implementation report from Obubra Local Government Area.

The State Task Group on WASH serves as a multi-stakeholder platform bringing together government agencies, civil society organisations, development partners and other stakeholders to strengthen coordination and improve water, sanitation and hygiene services across Cross River State.
