Councillors of the 8th Obubra Legislative Assembly have raised an SOS over what they described as the breakdown of democratic governance and accountability in Obubra Local Government Area.

At a resolution reached on January 21, 2026, the councillors accused the Chairman of Obubra Local Government Council, Hon Kingsley Arikpo, of executive highhandedness, fiscal impropriety, and administrative recklessness, alleging that these actions were enabled by the Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon Raymond Inaku.

Key allegations include the refusal to present financial records to the House, denial of access to project documents, disregard for House resolutions, and failure of appointees to honour legislative invitations. The councillors also cited public ridicule of legislators and the neglect of the legislative chambers and council headquarters.

As a result, the House resolved to commence impeachment proceedings against Hon Inaku. A formal notice of impeachment dated January 21, 2026, and signed by seven councillors, was issued and serves as evidence of the decision.

The councillors stressed that their action is not against the Cross River State Government and reaffirmed loyalty to Governor Bassey Edet Otu, pledging continued grassroots support for his administration.

They called on relevant authorities and stakeholders to urgently intervene to prevent further deterioration of governance in Obubra Local Government Area.

When contacted by TheInvestigator, the Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon Raymond Inaku, denied the allegations but stated, “It has been resolved, we just returned from Calabar yesterday.”

Shading more light, he revealed that “During that session, when there was no seconder for the impeachment the place became rowdy.

“Even though they were the majority, they didn’t have access to the mace which is the symbol of authority and couldn’t continue. But stakeholders have come in and the issues have been sorted out.”
