The Cross River State government has validated the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) data collated from Obubra Local Government Area. Following a stakeholders’ meeting held on October 27, 2025, the survey was commissioned to determine Obubra WASH status. The enumeration exercise took place from November 9 to 16, 2025, covering all eleven political wards of the LGA.

Adopting the data, the Chairman of Obubra Council, Hon Kingsley Arikpo, thanked the State Governor, Sen Bassey Edet Otu, for the political will to ensure the intervention sees daylight.

He noted that the programme was timely because “Our children are not taken into the military because of health issues related to water. They discovered that our children suffer from common ailments related to contaminated water. So I know this is associated with the fact that we don’t have good water.”

Represented by his Vice, Hon Leonard Ogwa, the Chairman said, “We accept the data on this day, the 19th day of December, 2025. I hereby adopt this data, and I believe that this data can be used.”

Furthermore, he said, “In the same way, we have confidence in the team, and we believe that this data will be secure, this data will be a true reflection of what we are suffering in Obubra.”

Relatively, His Royal Highness, Kingsley Obia, who spoke on behalf of the traditional institution, said he is elated that the data collected speaks to the reality on the ground.

Thanking the government, he said, “I would like to thank the State Government for picking Obubra, for making us part of this change. The basic challenge we have is the water challenge, good water.”

Throwing their weight behind the programme, he said, “We have total support for this programme. I would like to say to the State Government that has done a great feat for this event, I want to thank you, and God bless you.”

Earlier, while presenting the data to the Council Chairman for adoption, the Programmes Manager/Team Lead of RUWATSSA, Mr Ebit Bassey, reiterated that the intervention is part of the ongoing WASH System for Health (WS4H) Programme by his MDA.

He maintained that “It seeks to improve public health outcomes across communities in the State and is implemented with technical support from Self Help Africa (SHA).”

On the data collated, he said, “This is the data for now that is speaking for Obubra. All other data that has been before today is now obsolete. This is the current data that speaks for the Obubra people.

“This is the data that will be used to bring development, attract development to Obubra. As we speak now, development partners are willing to support Obubra. We had an online meeting with them yesterday.”

The data analysis and presentation were led by two consultants, Mr Benjamin Imoke and Mr Kingsley Ekpenyong.
