The Cross River State Ministry of Water Resources hosted a high-profile event to mark World Water Day 2025. The event brought together key stakeholders, government officials, and development partners to discuss water resource management and sustainable access to clean water in the state.
The event was held at the Metropolitan Hotel in Calabar Municipality on Friday, March 21, 2025.
In his keynote address, His Excellency, Senator Bassey Otu, the Governor of Cross River State, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving water access and sanitation across the state. He highlighted the importance of strengthening water infrastructures, particularly in rural areas.
Represented by Mr Orok Okon, Permanent Secretary, State Executive Council, he warned that “We are not immune to the impact of glaciers, hence the need for this event.”

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Barrister Bassey Offiong Mensah, while welcoming participants to the event, said the aim of the celebration is to enlighten the public.
He encouraged communities’ ownership of water and sanitation infrastructures to ensure sustainability.
Barrister Mensah maintained that the theme for this year, “Glacier Preservation” is apt.
Chairman of the House Committee on Water Resources and Sanitation in the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon Kingsley Ntui, the member representing Etung State Constituency pledged legislative support.
Supporting community ownership of projects, he urged the Ministry of Water Resources to engage the traditional institution.
On his part, the Managing Director of the Cross River State Water Board Limited, High Chief Godwin Nyiam, revealed that he has been meeting with investors, but many are reluctant because of a lack of legal framework.
He further stated that “the water sector cannot be run and managed by the government.”
In her goodwill message, Mrs Joy Aderele, Country Director of Self Help Africa, revealed that “Self Help Africa has been working in Nigeria for the past 25 years.”
Represented by Mr Dorgu Ebiye she reiterated that “Glacier preservation is a collective responsibility.” Adding that “We all have a role to play in reducing carbon emissions.”
Mr Anthony Kedang, the head of the Society for Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN) in Cross River commended its partner, the Ministry of Water Resources and State Task Group of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (STG-WASH) for marking the day.
He asserted that “the theme underscores glaciers’ critical role in water preservation. Glaciers are a pressing global challenge.”
World Water Day is celebrated annually on March 22 to advocate for sustainable water management and highlight the challenges faced by communities worldwide in accessing clean and safe water.
