In an operation early Saturday morning, January 11, 2025, security operatives arrested 203 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State.

According to journalist, Iwara U. Iwara, many of the arrested individuals reportedly travelled from the troubled Sahel Region of Africa into Cross River State, raising concerns about the potential security implications of their presence.

“This is a video of the 203 illegal miners arrested in Yakurr LGA, Cross River State, this morning. Most of them have travelled from the troubled Sahel Region of Africa to CRS and pose a serious security concern,” Iwara stated in a post on his Facebook page.

He commended the Cross River State Government for its proactive measures in addressing the situation, acknowledging their efforts to curb illegal activities and maintain security in the region. Iwara also hinted at additional measures being undertaken by the government, details of which were not disclosed in the post.

The arrest highlights ongoing challenges with illegal mining operations in Cross River State, which have environmental, economic, and security repercussions.
