Chief Maurice Omin Iso has been deemed the target of unjust persecution by authorities, following his recent arrest on December 23, 2024. Iso, a prominent figure in a legal dispute involving land ownership, was apprehended at his residence in Esuku Otu Ikot Ansa Calabar Municipality by security operatives, leading to a prolonged detention that has raised serious concerns about his well-being.
Speaking on behalf of Chief Iso, his Lead Counsel Chief Okoi Obono-Obla condemned the actions taken by the authorities, particularly in light of statements made by Barrister Edemdem Charles Ani, the Honorable Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice, Cross River State. Read the report about Ani’s statement:
According to Obono-Obla, the manner of Chief Iso’s arrest and subsequent detention reflects a troubling trend of victimisation against individuals advocating for their rights.
The detention has been characterised by a lack of access to medical care, as well as denial of communication with family and friends, raising alarms about Iso’s health and safety in custody.
Chief Iso is embroiled in a significant legal battle stemming from Suit No. HC/314/2021, which was initiated on November 26, 2021. The suit involves claims against various parties, including the Governor of Cross River State and Summit Hills Estates Development Services Ltd. A significant ruling was made on July 3, 2022, when Justice B.T. Ebuta granted a consent judgment in favour of Iso and his co-claimants, recognizing them as the rightful traditional owners of disputed lands, including regions where Summit Estates is located.
Obono-Obla stressed the importance of upholding fundamental rights, including the right to a fair hearing, personal liberty, and freedom of movement. He called for immediate action to rectify what he described as an unlawful detention.
