In a landmark ruling, Ita Okon, a 47-year-old man, was yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of an 8-year-old girl. The judgment was delivered by Honourable Justice Blessing Egwu of Family Court 2 in Calabar, Cross River State.
The court found Okon guilty of the heinous crime and, in addition to the life sentence, ordered him to pay a compensation of N1,000,000 to the young survivor.
This conviction marks a significant victory in the fight against violence towards women and girls in Nigeria.
