In a recent public interest article, Richard Inoyo, Country Director of Citizens’ Solution Network and a member of Friends of Public Accommodation and Education, has raised concerns over the absence of hostel accommodation in the University of Cross River’s Obubra and Ogoja campuses. His writeup highlights the significant impact this lack of infrastructure has on students, their families, and the university’s overall reputation.
According to Inoyo, despite the University’s establishment nearly two decades ago, students studying in faculties located in the Ogoja and Obubra campuses, such as Agriculture, Management Sciences, and some Social Science courses, have had to face the absence of proper student housing. He emphasized the financial and psychological strain this has placed on both students and their families, many of whom are forced to seek accommodation outside the school premises, often in less secure environments.
Inoyo expressed his disappointment that the situation has persisted for so long, noting that this shortfall negatively affects the academic performance and overall well-being of students. He further added that the lack of accommodation undermines the university’s ability to compete nationally and internationally. The importance of hostel facilities in fostering a conducive learning environment, improving students’ focus, and boosting institutional rankings cannot be overstated.
In his article, Inoyo called on Governor Prince Bassey Otu and Cross River State’s political leaders, including Senators Agom Jarigbe, Eteng Jonah Williams, and Asuquo Ekpenyong Jr., to act swiftly in addressing this long-standing issue. Drawing a comparison with the University of Lagos, which recently benefited from hostel buildings donated by prominent individuals like Femi Gbajabiamila, he urged Cross River’s political class to take similar steps in facilitating the construction of hostels in the University’s Ogoja and Obubra campuses.
Inoyo further appealed for collaboration between public officeholders and private philanthropists to contribute towards building the necessary infrastructure, reminding them that such initiatives would leave lasting legacies. He highlighted that over 33 hectares of land available on both campuses could easily accommodate the much-needed hostel facilities.
Citing research by Adams (2022) and Abramson (2022), Inoyo underscored the critical role of student housing in creating a conducive social and academic environment, making universities more attractive to potential students, and enhancing their overall reputation. He noted that well-equipped hostels, complete with amenities such as laundry rooms, internet access, and recreational areas, are essential for improving the academic and social life of students.
In conclusion, Inoyo emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue and stated that organizations like Citizens’ Solution Network would continue advocating for better student accommodations at the University of Cross River and beyond.
