Dr Erasmus Ekpang Nku-Ekpang, Commissioner for Information in Cross River State, has completed his first year in office, marking a period of substantial progress and revitalization within the Ministry of Information. Appointed by Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu and inaugurated on August 16, 2023. Dr Ekpang spoke to some journalists in his office highlighting his achievements.

Upon assuming office on August 17, 2023, Dr Ekpang, a Doctorate Degree holder in Environmental Sciences and Management, said upon resuming work he quickly addressed the deteriorating conditions within the Ministry, which had been severely impacted by the #EndSARS protests of October 2020. His priority was restoring the public power supply to the Ministry’s building, creating a safer and more conducive working environment for the staff.

Aligned with Governor Otu’s “People First” mantra, Dr Ekpang implemented a communication strategy focused on restoring public trust, amplifying government policies, promoting positive state values, and fostering an enabling environment for the media.

“My efforts have enhanced the visibility of Cross River State and its developmental achievements,” the Commissioner maintained.

Professional Development And Infrastructure Improvements

In December 2023, Dr Ekpang further bolstered his communication expertise by completing a Master Class Training Programme with the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, earning the status of a Chartered Professional. This qualification has enabled him to better serve the state, with his dedication to truth and transparency earning widespread approval from Cross Riverians.

“Significant strides have also been made in improving the Ministry’s infrastructure and staff welfare. Governor Otu’s approval for the procurement of digital machines and accessories for the Cross River State Government Printing Press marks a major advancement.” Dr Ekpang revealed, adding that, “The Ministry has since produced and circulated over 5,000 copies of the “Giant Strides” magazine, which highlights key achievements of the administration. Additionally, the Cross River State Tenders Journal and Daily News Bulletin have been consistently published online, maintaining a steady flow of information to the public.”

Revitalization Of State Media Outlets

He further stated that under his leadership, the Cross River State Newspaper Corporation has seen the revival of the Nigerian Chronicle and Weekend Chronicle newspapers, which now circulate regularly despite financial challenges. And that “Efforts are also underway to renovate the corporation’s facilities that were damaged during the #EndSARS protests, further strengthening its operations.”

At the Cross River Broadcasting Corporation (CRBC), Dr Ekpang said he has overseen the installation of new transmitters, studio cameras, and a 33KVA power transformer, significantly enhancing the station’s broadcasting capabilities. The installation of a new 500KVA generator as a backup ensures a consistent power supply, enabling 20 hours of daily broadcasting.

Economic Contributions

The Commissioner for Information maintained that his collaboration with the Cross River State Signage and Advertisement Agency (CRISSAA), led by Director-General Mr Ubong Sam, has resulted in high revenue inflows and improved compliance, contributing positively to the state’s economy.
