Connected Development (CODE) recently paid a strategic visit to the Cross River State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ededem C. Ani, Esq. to lobby for and ease the domestication of the Freedom of Information Act, 2011.
During the visit, Hon. Martins Achadu, Hon. Mercy Akpama, and Hon. Bassey Edet who are members of the State House of Assembly and represent Yala 2, Yakurr 2, and Bakassi State constituencies respectively were also visited.
Efanga Etim, CODE’s State Support Officer, led the visit along with the State FOI-Coalition members. During the separate visits, Efanga gave a brief overview of the “Power of Voices Fair for All” projects that CODE is implementing with support from Oxfam. He highlighted the benefits of domesticating the FOI Act and pledged CODE’s willingness to smoothen the process.
The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice praised the initiative and emphasized the importance of the bill being pressed for by CODE. He committed to making it a reality, stating that the domestication of the FOI Act is a welcomed development as it seeks transparency and accountability from the various government departments and MDAs.
The House of Assembly members also spoke in support of domesticating the FOI Act in the State and welcomed CODE’s support.
