When The Accused Alleges: Halima Shehu, Betta Edu And The Imperative Of Legal Clarity BY OGAR EMMANUEL OKO

While transparency and accountability are paramount, it is equally important to exercise caution and diligence in the pursuit of justice.

In recent times, the Nigerian political landscape has been marred by allegations of financial impropriety within the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The focus of these accusations has shifted towards the Minister, Dr. Betta Edu, who stands accused by her embattled subordinate, Haj. Halima Shehu, the suspended National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Social Investment Program Agency (NSIPA). As a Nigerian, who is currently battling to survive, it is disheartening to witness such internal strife, especially when the nation is grappling with significant socio-economic challenges.

As a concerned Nigerian, it is crucial to stress the importance of responsibility in making serious allegations against public officials. Haj. Halima, is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged embezzlement, misappropriation or, rather put, the disappearance of N44 billion from the NSIPA account under her watch, which was meant for N-power beneficiaries. While she was being squeezed in EFCC facility, she has chosen to point fingers at the Minister, further complicating an already intricate situation. She has accused the Minister, Dr. Betta of looting over N500 million from the said account. Though, Betta Edu has told the public that she got the approval of the President, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tunibu, to use the money for the implementation of the grants to vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Ogun and Cross River States.

While transparency and accountability are paramount, it is equally important to exercise caution and diligence in the pursuit of justice. If one may ask, why did Halima keep to herself the allegation against Betta when she hold the reins? Why did she not raise alarm earlier? Why now that she stands suspended? This her allegation is suspicious and must be taken with a pinch of salt. It looks like the last kick of a dying horse. She would not like to sink alone, I guess!

Accusations of financial impropriety should not be wielded as weapons in personal or professional disputes. The public, as well as the individuals involved, deserve a fair and impartial investigation. Instead of engaging in a public mudslinging match, Mrs. Halima Shehu should focus on clearing her name of the charges she currently faces. This is not only a matter of personal integrity but also a demonstration of respect for the legal process.

In the midst of these allegations, it is imperative for all parties involved to allow the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation. Casting aspersions in the public domain only serves to create confusion and undermine the public’s trust in the institutions designed to uphold justice.

As a society, we must encourage transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law. Therefore, I urge Mrs. Halima Shehu to desist from making unfounded allegations against Minister Dr. Betta Edu and instead focus on providing a clear and comprehensive defense against the allegations brought against her. Let the legal process unfold without interference, allowing truth and justice to prevail in the interest of our nation and its citizens.
