Amnesty International Nigeria has partnered with the Civil Society Network in Cross River State to take the fight for human rights to the next level.
The partnership was sealed after a collaborative meeting held in Calabar, the Cross River State capital at Monty Suites on Tuesday, 24 October, 2023.
Describing the meeting as pertinent, the Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, Mr. Isa Sanusi said all hands must be on deck to achieve set goals.
Mr. Sanusi reiterated that “research is key in our work”. He urged participants to count on their support in human rights education.
The Country Director went on to reveal plans to unveil a human rights clinic at the University of Calabar (UNICAL).
While opening the floor for actionable plans, Leader Ben Usang, Head of Civil Society Network in Cross River said the partnership is a big milestone and will achieve their set goals.
Calling for a robust contribution he maintained that “there are issues in our state clearly, we need a mutually respectful and tangible relationship that will yield desired results”.
He called on Amnesty International Nigeria to look into the growing concerns raised by students of UNICAL about sexual and other forms of abuse.
On his part, Mr. Canice Chukwu, a researcher with Amnesty International Nigeria revealed that they have urged the management of UNICAL to “thoroughly investigate issues of abuses on students by staff and ensure justice for victims and survivors”.
He took participants down memory lane on past activities of the organization in Cross River.
